History of Cruise The Rockies

Cruise The Rockies I was our very first Cruise The Rockies and was held in August 2001. We met in Estes Park Colorado on a Friday. On Saturday AM, 38 cruisers were off to cruise through Rocky Mountain National Park, over Trail Ridge Road and down to Winter Park where we spent Saturday night at a ski resort.

Cruise The Rockies II was held in August 2002, A total of 78 cruisers started at Glenwood Springs Colorado on Friday with a car show in the hotel parking lot and a "pre-cruise" cruise up the Frying Pan River. On Saturday AM we cruised down to Aspen and up over Independence Pass to Copper Mountain where we spent the night and following day in the beautiful Colorado High Country.

CTR II

Cruise The Rockies III was the beginning of our new plan for Cruise The Rockies. In the earlier events, we met at one place and then cruised to another site where we would spend the night. The problem with this was that you had to unpack for the day then repack for the cruise and then unpack again that night. We decided to have a base area where we could stay and then do multiple cruises from that area. Based in Colorado Springs, we had a cruiser show in the parking lot of the hotel and then we were off to cruisin. We cruised to Cripple Creek, Garden of the Gods and up Pikes Peak.

CTR III

Cruise The Rockies IV was based in Montrose Colorado. We spent the weekend what we do best. Cruising. We cruise to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, then off to Ouray Colorado for a day of shopping and then a show and shine in City Park at Montrose. The next day was a all day cruise covering over 240 miles and cruising over five mountain pass’s. Now, if that wasn’t enough, the next day we were off cruising to Mesa Verda National Park.

For Cruise The Rockies VI, 148 Cruiser from all over the USA converged on this little mountain town in Northern New Mexico for a weekend of cruising, having fun with old and new friends, cruising, a BBQ in the park, cruising, a night parade through town showing off all the lighting you can put on a cruiser, cruising, a gathering in the park to show off the cruisers, and more cruising.

CTRVI

Steamboat Springs, CO was the site chosen for CTR VII - August 2007. Located in the heart of the northern Colorado Rockies, there were multiple cruise routes available for the Colorado PT Cruiser Club to show our 100 plus registered guests. From an early cruise (for those anxious PTers) north of Steamboat to Columbine Cabins, to a "Cruise In" held at the Host Hotel parking lot (complete with shiny and glowing PTs), to a full-day cruise from Steamboat Springs to Craig, then Meeker and over "The Flat Tops Wilderness Trail" (survived by 55 dusty PTs), to one last cruise to Columbine Cabins ending at Fish Creek Falls, satisfied/smiling PT enthusiasts got their fill of some of the most gorgeous Colorado scenery yet. The Colorado PT Cruiser Club was able to donate to the local food bank(and this was the first such donation from any group holding an event in Steamboat we were told by the manager of the food bank), Multiple Sclerosis, and Breast Cancer.

CTR VII

Cruise The Rockies VIII was held August 8th-10th in beautiful Golden Colorado. The economy was tight and gas prices were high, but the spirit of 70 PT Cruisers full of happy people made up for it. From a meet & greet picnic in the hotel parking garage, to cruises to Mt Evans, the Latiat Loop, Red Rocks, the Peak to Peak highway plus touring Coors Brewery, movies in the city park, a cruise in at Applewood Park and much more filled the weekend with fun. The car count was down from earlier years, but the spirit was as high as ever. Thanks to everyone that could make this years event because it could not happen without you. Until we cruise again, enjoy and be safe.

CTR VIII

Cruise The Rockies IX, based in Canon City Colorado, was held August 6th through the 9th, 2009. We started off with a short cruise to the Holy Cross Winery for some wine tasting. Then it was off for a Picnic at 4 Mile Ranch Park - compliments of Neil and Anne Weekley (CPTCC Club Members). On Friday, it was off to the world's highest suspension bridge for a photo shoot with most of the cruisers and their riders and a cruise over Skyline Drive and after dark, we cruised the streets of Canon City with all the light on. The main cruise on Saturday was a Cruise to Bishops Castle and Westcliffe for some "Gorgeous Scenery - Colorado PT Cruiser Club Style". On Saturday night, Canon City Chrysler had a car show in their parking lot and provided everyone with food and drink. If that was not enough, Sunday there was a cruise from Canon City up to Cripple Creek.
Thank you to all that came to this event and a very special thanks to Anne & Neil’s neighbors for opening their home up to all of us on Thursday.

Cruise the Rockies X was held in the Western Slope community of Grand Junction, Colorado, August 12-15, 2010. In attendance were 78 bright and shiny PT Cruisers (complete with drivers and passengers). Festivities began on Thursday with a cruise to a local Winery and a “Weenie Roast” at the Host Hotel put on by the Colorado PT Cruiser Club. Bright and early Friday morning we were off to visit the spectacular “Gateway Canyon Resort” complete with a fantastic (privately owned) automobile collection. The cruise to Gateway was chockfull of “Natural Beauty - Colorado Style”. For those “Cruisers” arriving Friday, another cruise to a local Winery was a late afternoon activity followed by pizza (and more weenies and leftovers from Thursday night) at the Host Hotel. Then as darkness fell on Grand Junction, our “Cruise In” was held at the front entrance of the Country Inns of America, complete with mottoRockin’ music and glowing PT Cruisers (literally). Since the  of CPTCC is “If You Haven’t Cruised Colorado You Haven’t Cruised”, we were off bright and early Saturday morning to cruise the breathtaking “Colorado National Monument” and as luck would have it all National Parks were free the weekend of CTR X. It almost seemed like a crime to see this awesome beauty for free, but it certainly was appreciated. Comments like – beautiful, awesome, magnificent were flying all over the event. Saturday evening our “Cruise In” awards winners were announced and afterwards several of our participants cruised over to “Hooters” for a late evening Car Show. A good time was had by all. Sunday morning many Cruisers headed home and a few of our Cruisers went on one last “CTR X Cruise” over the Grand Mesa. The lakes and scenery were unforgettable.

Cruise The Rockies

Cruise the Rockies XI was held in beautiful Gunnison, CO, August 12-14, 2011.  The Colorado PT Cruiser Club's - Second Decade was based at the Water Wheel Inn with 58 beautiful PT Cruisers filling the parking lot.  We basically had the entire hotel to ourselves.  Excited cruisers started arriving on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, not wanting to be late.  Anxious to make new friends, share their gorgeous cruisers with other PT "Maniacs", and reconnect with old friends, CTR XI became reality in the beautiful Gunnison Valley.  We started off with a day of relaxation at the hotel and a "Hot Dog Barbecue" at the Host Hotel on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011.  With help from all the Cruisers, we had a delicious picnic and enough left overs for Saturday night, as well.  Friday morning, Aug. 12, 2011, we were off, complete with a police escort by the Gunnison Police Department, to the gorgeous town of Crested Butte.  Many cruisers wandered the town, enjoying terrific lunches and shopping the quaint shops of the town.  Several cruisers continued up to the ski area and rode the ski lifts to the top of Crested Butte.  The landscape was covered with gorgeous Colorado wild flowers; thanks to the late spring snows and large amounts of rain, as well.  Friday evening we "Cruised" to the local Sonic Drive In Restaurant and completely filled the parking lot, plus there we many cars that overflowed into the streets.  We Cruisers love to display our "rides" and we created quite a stir in this small town.  Saturday morning we were off to the sleepy mountain town of Lake City.  A great deal of thanks goes out to Jack Smith and Steve Nelson for slowing the traffic on the highway so we could all get out and cruise together as one big "PT Cruiser" group.  The cruise to Lake City was beautiful and when we got to town some Cruisers stopped for lunch and some went on to the top of Slumgullion Pass to see the beautiful North Creek Falls (a waterfall in the middle of a high mountain plateau).  If you are ever in Lake City again, please visit the Cannibal Grill and look for Colorado PT Cruisers CTR XI written on one of the beams in black magic marker.   I can't imagine who would do such a thing, but it is there.  Saturday night we planned a picnic/car show in the park in Gunnison, but a wedding had taken over: so we rounded up all the cruisers and headed back to the Water Wheel for a picnic barbecue.  Ron & Shirley Duez and Galen & Billie Theye generously donated hot dogs and margaritas served from the "Margaritaville Cruiser".  Pat Liles brought a "surprise" birthday cake for his wife Cindy, and after everyone got on a "sugar high" several cruisers were seen dancing in the middle of the picnic.  A special thanks to Soni Brosze for taking on the task of counting the ballots for our awards.

Thanks to the generosity of our event participants, we were able to donate $500.00 to the local food bank (who told us no club has ever done this for them and they were extremely thankful) and Neil & Anne Weekley went home with a "Cruiser Full" of donations to be sent overseas to our troops.  Thanks to you all for your generosity.  We hope this brightened the day for our men and women protecting our precious freedom.
